As part of Mental Health Awareness Week 13-19th May, Mr Greenacres is planning a slide show Wed 15th at Friern Barnet Library and a walk, Sun 19th May, meeting outside Friern Barnet Community Library, N11 3DS 12.30pm. All welcome.

For those who aren't so keen on walking, try this easier event.

As well as the above slideshow, Mr Greenacres will also be showing the latest in our series of slide show presentations. If you thought you knew Finchley, think again, this armchair tour will take you to places you may not know existed - all on your own doorstep. This presentation will focus on buildings and spaces in or around our town centres without venturing too far off the beaten track but never fear, there are still treasures to discover.

The presentation will take place Saturday 25th May, 2pm at Trinity Church Centre as part of the Trinity in May Festival. Each event will look at different locations, the primary purpose to show good walking routes.

Join us for a Future Of Transport In Finchley discussion evening at Avenue House. We have invited a panel of experts to field your questions and stimulate a lively debate on all aspects of local travel. The motor car is often regarded as an indispensable accoutrement of modern living. But is it so absolutely necessary? And what is the true cost? We now have 150,000 cars in the borough, more than 10 times the number we had 50 years ago. Our once practically empty roads are now jam packed and fume filled, pollution is at dangerously high levels and priority has been given to motor traffic at all costs. As roads have expanded, greenery has disappeared.

But what about more sustainable forms of transport? Are we here in Finchley doing enough? Have we joined the Mayor’s ‘Cycling Revolution‘? Could we be walking more? What about new technology like electric cars and hydrogen fuel cells? Are we planning a public transport infrastructure for future generations? Is the Council doing enough for sustainable future transport? If you have any views or questions, please come along for what promises to be an interesting and stimulating discussion evening. Please submit questions in writing by March 15^th.

We invite you to join the community in a parade from the closed Friern Barnet Library, via the about-to-be-closed North Finchley library, through the hard hit North Finchley High Road and on to Victoria Park, one of the local parks threatened with exclusive private events hire.

Greenacre Bicycle Rally - June 10th 2012

A hundred people have already signed up for the fifth Greenacre Bicycle Rally, today, June 10th - why not join them?

Pre-registration on-line has now closed, but it's sunny and bright so join us at artsdepot, North Finchley, N12 0GA and you can still register there until 11.30am.

GBR GOOD NEWS

As we leave 2011, we have two bits of good news:

First, The Finchley Society, will be sponsoring the Greenacre Bicycle Rally for 2012 (GBR2012 10th June) - fantastic news, and our thanks to FinSoc.

Secondly, GBR founder, and Green Spaces and Sustainable Transport Coordinator for the Greenacre Project, met with the Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, a couple of months ago. Among Mike's concerns was the anti-cycling campaign that had been started by Dennis Pepper, Friends of Windsor Open Space.

The brook is an important green space, not just for breathing fresher air, walking but also for cycling. It's the perfect place for parents wishing to teach their children how to ride a bicycle. Dennis Pepper had been trying to ban bikes from the brook!!

GBR suggested to Councillor Cornelius, that the no cycling signs be removed and replaced with cycle/pedestrian friendly signs. Councillor Cornelius agreed to have the no-cycling signs removed.

We are pleased to report that on a recent Christmas ride, we went via Windsor Open Space and joy of joys, the no-cycling signs have been removed.

Where have all the riders gone?

Oh! There they are...

What a wonderful experience to cycle on busy London roads without the traffic - such a fantastic experience for children - brilliant day out...same time next year?

The Greenacre Bicycle Rally in the rain.

It rained, and rained and rained but still the riders came to make the fourth Greenacre Bicycle rally a success!

An impressive number, including many of our young riders, did both legs of the journey arriving at Barnet Countryside Centre, where we could find some shelter!

London Borough of Barnet Denies Grant for Greenacre Bicycle Rally

We have just been informed that London Borough of Barnet will not be giving us a grant for this year's rally.

In the previous three years Barnet has awarded a small but helpful grant (192.00 for 2008 and 2009 and 400.00 for 2010). LBB does nothing to promote cycling in the borough and so The Greenacre Bicycle Rally is doing so, in the spirit of Mayor Boris Johnson's message to promote safe cycling throughout London. It is the only event of its kind in the borough, and yet we are denied a grant, in spite of the borough's grant co-ordinator recommending the event being given the same amount as last year. Neighbouring LB Enfield promotes and totally funds a similar event. It won't come as a surprise that the councillor who decided not to award this money was none other than the one who has axed funding to the borough's museums, resulting in their closure, and is desperately trying to get rid of libraries. It seems sad that we cannot be given the same amount as one LBB councillor chose to spend on one taxi fare.
